About the destination: L'Aquila is a city and comune in Southern Italy, both the capital city of the Abruzzo region and of the Province of L'Aquila. Home to the University of L'Aquila, it is a lively college town and, as such, has many cultural institutions: a repertory theater, a symphony orchestra, a fine-arts academy, a state conservatory, a film institute. There are several ski resorts in the surrounding province: Campo Imperatore, Ovindoli, Pescasseroli, Roccaraso, Scanno. There are at least six churches to visit including the Duomo, located on the Piazza del Duomo, and Santa Maria di Collemaggio, a Templar church with beautiful rose windows. Other places to see include the Museo Nazionale d'Abruzzo, which is located in the northend of the city. The Museo Nazionale d'Abruzzo has several different sections including paintings, Roman finds, but its most famous feature is the skeleton of a mammoth that was found in the local area. Also there is the Fontana delle 99 Cannelle that represent the 99 churches that were originally in the city.

2. Calascio
Stay
About the destination: Perched high in the Gran Sasso d’Italia mountains, Calascio is a tiny medieval village best known for Rocca Calascio, one of the highest fortresses in Italy. At nearly 1,500 meters above sea level, the stone ruins of the castle crown a ridge with sweeping views of the surrounding peaks and valleys of the Abruzzo region. The atmosphere is otherworldly: crumbling towers outlined against the sky, narrow sheep tracks cutting across rocky slopes, and the constant play of wind and light over the landscape. The village itself is small and quiet, with stone houses, steep lanes, and the feeling of a place that time almost forgot. Walking through Calascio and the nearby hamlet of Rocca Calascio, you’ll find simple trattorias serving hearty Abruzzese dishes—think homemade pasta, lamb, local cheeses, and mountain herbs. This is a destination for travelers who enjoy slow travel: lingering over long lunches, exploring on foot, and soaking in the authenticity of rural Italy. Most visitors come for the hikes and panoramas. A well-marked path leads from the village up to Rocca Calascio in about 30–45 minutes, and from the fortress there are trails that connect to other viewpoints and nearby villages. Photographers and filmmakers love this area; Rocca Calascio has appeared in movies such as “Ladyhawke” and “The Name of the Rose,” and sunset here—when the mountains turn pink and gold—is especially spectacular. Calascio makes a great base for exploring the wider Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park. Day trips can include visits to hilltop towns like Santo Stefano di Sessanio and Castel del Monte, or drives along winding mountain roads that reveal new vistas at every turn. Accommodation ranges from rustic guesthouses to charming alberghi diffusi (scattered hotels in restored historic buildings). Come prepared for cooler temperatures, even in summer, and for a kind of beauty that’s stark, quiet, and unforgettable.
